How High to Hang a Pendant Light Over a Dining Table
Measure from the table top to the lowest edge of the shade, not to the ceiling.
The height rule: 76–91 cm above the table
The distance that matters is the clearance: the gap between the table top and the lowest point of the pendant. Designers quote it in inches, and the most common figure is 30–36 in, or 76–91 cm, for an 8 ft (2.4 m) ceiling. Kylie M Interiors and Lighting New York both give that range. Studio McGee is slightly tighter, at 32–36 in (81–91 cm).
Designers quoted by Homes & Gardens land in the same place. Susan Sutter suggests 30–36 in above a standard 30-inch table, and Amy Forshew says at least 36 in. One designer, Michael Sandsmark, quotes 40–44 in (102–112 cm) for chandeliers. That higher figure applies to larger, taller fixtures.
Adjusting for your ceiling height
A taller ceiling needs more clearance, so the fixture keeps its place in the room. Studio McGee's rule is to add about 3 in (7.5 cm) for every foot (30 cm) above 8 ft. Lighting New York gives these ranges:
| Ceiling height | Table top to bottom of shade | Bottom of shade from the floor* |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 m (8 ft) | 76–91 cm | 152–167 cm |
| 2.7 m (9 ft) | 84–99 cm | 160–175 cm |
| 3.0 m (10 ft) | 91–107 cm | 168–183 cm |
*Our calculation for a 76 cm (30 in) table. Source ranges converted from inches and rounded to the nearest centimetre.
The sources differ by a few centimetres. Kylie M Interiors, for example, gives 33–36 in for a 9 ft ceiling and 36–40 in for 10 ft. It calls its numbers "guidelines, not rules", and that is the right way to read all of them.
Pendant width and how many to hang
Height is half of the proportion. Size is the other half. Kylie M Interiors gives a clear range: the fixture should be at least 50% of the table's width and up to 30 cm (12 in) narrower than the table's width or length. A 100 cm round table therefore suits a fixture of 50–70 cm in diameter.
One large pendant or several smaller ones
A round or square table usually takes one fixture centred above it. A long rectangular table can take either one long fitting or a row of two or three pendants. None of the sources we checked gives a spacing figure for dining tables, so treat this as our practical guidance: space the pendants evenly along the centre line of the table, and centre the group on the table's length. For kitchen islands, Studio McGee quotes about 76 cm (30 in) between pendants. We use that only as a reference point, not as a dining-table rule.
Sightlines: the sit-down test
The measurements are a starting point. The final check is done sitting down. Designer Simon Temprell, quoted by Homes & Gardens, puts the bottom of the fixture about 3 ft (91 cm) above the table and "just above eye-line". Sit in a dining chair and check three things:
- You can see the person opposite without looking around the shade.
- The bulb or the brightest part of the fitting is not directly in your eyeline.
- Standing guests do not bump their heads at the edge of the table.
If any of these fails, raise the fitting a little. Before you fix it in place, hold or hang it temporarily at the planned height and test it.
Working out the cable drop
The cable drop is the length from the ceiling to the bottom of the shade. Calculate it like this:
Compare that figure with the listing. Our product pages state the cable length, often as "adjustable up to" a maximum. Check whether the listed length is measured to the top or the bottom of the shade. If the listing does not say, email contact@eveningform.com before you order. Also check the weight of the fitting against the ceiling fixing. A large metal shade needs a secure fixing point. Have a registered electrician connect or replace fixed ceiling wiring.
Check the light source in the listing too. Some pendants take an E27 bulb that is sold separately. Others have an integrated LED that cannot be replaced. For dimming, follow the listing: some are marked "Depends on bulb and dimmer used" and some "No".
Five common mistakes
- Centring on the room instead of the table. The pendant belongs over the table, even if the ceiling point sits elsewhere. A swag hook and a longer cable can move the fitting sideways.
- Hanging it too high. A fitting that floats near the ceiling loses its link with the table and leaves the table top dim.
- Hanging it too low. A fitting in the sightline blocks conversation across the table.
- Choosing a fixture that is too small. Below half the table's width, it looks lost. Use the width rule above.
- Ordering before measuring the drop. A short cable cannot be fixed afterwards. Work out the drop first.

Frequently asked questions
How high should a pendant light be above a dining table?
The bottom of the shade should sit 76–91 cm (30–36 in) above the table top on a 2.4 m ceiling. Add about 7–8 cm for each extra 30 cm of ceiling height. Check the result by sitting at the table: you should see the person opposite without leaning.
How high should a pendant hang with a 2.7 m or 3 m ceiling?
For a 2.7 m (9 ft) ceiling, Lighting New York gives 84–99 cm between table top and shade. For 3 m (10 ft), it gives 91–107 cm. Other sources differ by a few centimetres, so adjust in 8–10 cm steps.
What size pendant suits my dining table?
Choose a fixture at least half the width of the table and no more than 30 cm narrower than its width or length. For a 90 cm wide table, that is 45–60 cm. For a 100 cm round table, it is 50–70 cm.
How many pendants should hang over a dining table?
One fixture is usual for round and square tables. A long rectangular table can take one long fitting or two or three pendants in a row. Space them evenly along the table's centre line and centre the group on the table's length.
Should the pendant be centred on the table or the room?
Centre it on the table. The light is there to serve the table. If the ceiling point is not above the table, use a swag hook and a longer cable to move the fitting.
Can I put a dining pendant on a dimmer?
Only if the listing allows it. Some of our pendants are marked "Depends on bulb and dimmer used" and some are marked "No". With a replaceable bulb, use a bulb labelled dimmable and a compatible dimmer. A non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer can flicker or buzz.
Can I hang a pendant lower for a more dramatic look?
You can, but only a few centimetres. Go lower in 8–10 cm steps and run the sit-down test at each one. If the fitting blocks your view across the table, it is too low.
